Namibia Windhoek Victoria Falls Day 2: Namib Rand Nature Reserve

The 200 000 hectares Namib Rand is one of the biggest private nature reserves in Southern Africa. It’s a vast wilderness on the edge of the Namib Desert, with epic landscapes of massive apricot dunes and grassy plains peppered with mysterious fairy circles.

The reserve was established in the 1980s when landowner Albi Brückner integrated a number of livestock farms to form a rehabilitated wilderness area. Today, with its high-quality, low-impact tourism model, the Namib Rand is a model of conservation success.

Along the edge of the Namib Desert there are thousands of small circles dotted around on the ground, like lunar pockmarks, in which nothing grows. Various theories have been formed by scientists and researchers trying to explain their existence: that they’re a result of fungi which poison the soil; meteor showers, or termites. However, no one knows for certain why they’re there.

Accommodation inside the reserve is restricted to one bed per 1000 hectares. Please inquire if you would like to spend a night or two inside the Namib Rand reserve.

Naukluft Sossusvlei

You should enter the Namib-Naukluft Park at sunrise, while the temperature is still mild and when the dune contrasts are at their best.

Drive through the dune corridor down to the Vlei to take in the vistas. At Dune 45, make a stop to view the the world’s most photographed dune. Further along, a gradual 2,6 kilometer round-trip guided walk up to Dead Vlei is a must for the healthy visitors. The more energetic have the opportunity to climb to the upper ridge of Big Daddy Dune, one of the highest dunes in this area!  Sossuvlei Lodge, pool, restaurant, bar (DBB).

Windhoek Namib Rand Victoria Falls Self Drive Safari Day 3 & 4: Walvis Bay & Swakopmund

Whether you spend a morning on the water with adventure, drinks food and the best Walvis Bay oysters, or perhaps a full Marine Dune day, where you will visit the spectacular Sandwich Harbour or drive through the massive sand dunes and try Sand Boarding. We particularly like the catamaran tour we offer. Lots of fun with seals, pelicans and delicious oysters.

Damaraland & Kunene region is home to giant mountains, formed millions ago when lava was all the rage, rise sheer and jagged from the barren plains of the inner Namib Desert. Most impressive of these are Spitzkoppe and the Brandberg Massif – which, in addition to being the highest peak in the country, has the allure of ancient rock paintings and the intriguing White Lady of Brandberg. Among the red sandstone boulders and hills at Twyfelfontein is the most impressive collection of petroglyphs in Africa. Around 2,500 ancient rock paintings and engravings feature animals, tracks and abstract symbols. The exact age is unknown but archaeological evidence indicates that hunter/gatherers lived here more than 7,000 years ago.
