If you miss the Sandwich Harbor Tour, you may regret it for the rest of your life. Where else in the world can you experience the Atlantic Ocean on one side of your vehicle and some of the world’s highest dunes on the other side? Add to this the fact that these dunes lie in one of the oldest deserts in the world, the Namib Desert, with its breathtaking landscape that constantly changes as we move. Although called Sandwich Harbour, it was never a harbor but rather a large shallow lagoon. The name Sandwich Harbor comes from the time when whalers and small fishing boats still had access to the lagoon or harbor, but the lagoon silted up and is now known for its bird life.
After departure we head south. Our first stop is at the lagoon, where flocks of flamingos create a colorful scene as they feed in the lagoon’s shallow waters. Recent bird surveys show record numbers of flamingo, plovers and terns in the area between Walvis Bay and Sandwich Harbor. The next stop is on a high dune, from where we have a clear view of the salt flats, the various collection areas and mountains of salt that are almost as high as the dune. This salt is exported worldwide and also to Europe, where it is used, among other things, to melt snow.
h3Sandwich Harbor Tour Kuiseb Delta/h3
From there we enter the Kuiseb Delta with its unique and interesting ecosystem where guests can see springbok and jackal. On the way to the border to Namib Naukluft Park we cross the salt marshes. Once inside, we drive along the beach to Sandwich Harbor. At Sandwich Harbor, guests have the opportunity to stretch their legs and take a stroll along the lagoon. Bring your camera as this is a photographer’s dream, bird life and beautiful scenery.
By now, the fresh air may have us craving something to eat, and we’ll stop either on the beach or in the dunes for light snacks and refreshing drinks.
On the way back we visit a spectacular viewpoint high in the dunes where you can enjoy a bird’s eye view of the Sandwich Harbor lagoon. From there our route takes us about 6 km through the dunes back to the border.
We often point out places where animals dig for water, look for food and other interesting phenomena. We would also arrange for you to slide down the famous dunes.
The entire Walvis Bay day tour is operated using 4WD vehicles and fully qualified drivers who have extensive experience in dune driving.
The Sandwich Harbor Tour can be combined with the boat trip on a single day, if your cruise ship arrives before 8:00.
On the trip to the Seal Islands you will be entertained by seals jumping on the catamaran while you can enjoy the fresh oysters from the west coast. Pelicans also regularly land on the ship hoping for a few fish.
